Halftone Kaiju

Retro game illustration built on visible halftone dithering. The texture is the style — smooth gradients would destroy it.

Works for

  • Retro game and print-inspired key art
  • Action frames that benefit from a coarse texture
  • Work that should look reproduced rather than rendered

Fails on

  • Smooth gradients anywhere in frame — they instantly read as a different medium
  • Fine detail below the dot pitch, which simply disappears
  • Scaling that breaks the dot grid into moiré
  • Illustrated
  • Halftone
  • Retro
  • Action

The dither is not a filter over the top, it is the rendering resolution. Every value in the frame has to be expressible in the dot pattern, which is a real constraint on how much detail any shape can carry — and honouring it is what separates this from a halftone overlay.

No motion spec yet. This entry is a still, and motion character is half of a video style — how it eases, how much it drifts, what it does on a cut. Until that is defined and tested, the field is left empty rather than guessed at.
