Works for
- Poster and key-art work
- Anything that must survive being reproduced small or in few colours
- Scenes that read better as graphic shape than as photograph
Fails on
- Detailed subjects — the flat treatment has nowhere to put the detail
- Adding realistic shading, which breaks the graphic logic
- Palettes beyond about six colours; the discipline is the style

Depth here is entirely stacking order and value, not light. Each plane is a flat silhouette a step lighter or darker than the one behind it. That is why it holds up at any size, and why one gradient in the wrong place undoes the whole thing.
