Prism Skin

Hard specular refraction thrown across skin. Colour arrives as light on the subject rather than in the grade.

Works for

  • Beauty and cosmetics work
  • Beauty frames that need colour without a colour cast
  • Close-ups that can carry very high-frequency detail

Fails on

  • Wider framing — the refraction stops registering as light and starts looking like noise
  • Soft diffused sources, which cannot throw a hard enough caustic
  • Grading colour in afterwards; it has to come from the light or it looks pasted
  • Beauty
  • Editorial
  • Specular
  • Colourful

The distinction that matters: the colour is in the scene, not in the grade. A rainbow LUT over neutral skin looks nothing like this, because a real caustic lands unevenly and follows the form. Getting that wrong is the usual failure of this look.

No motion spec yet. This entry is a still, and motion character is half of a video style — how it eases, how much it drifts, what it does on a cut. Until that is defined and tested, the field is left empty rather than guessed at.
